British woman successfully undergoes bariatric surgery at KIMS Gachibowli

Hyderabad: A 59-year-old British woman, working as a licensed black taxi driver in London, successfully underwent bariatric surgery at KIMS Hospitals, Gachibowli.

The procedure was performed by Dr Kesava Reddy Mannur, Clinical Director, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Patient background

The patient, Alexandria Fox, weighed 102 kg and was suffering from hypertension, kidney failure and thyroid issues. She chose to undergo a Sleeve Gastrectomy after seeing the successful results of her husband Jane Fox’s earlier bariatric surgery.

“In 2023, I performed bariatric surgery Gastric Bypass in London on Jane Fox, the husband of Alexandria,” said Dr Mannur.

“Jane lost 64 kg, experienced complete relief from back, hip and knee joint pains, and complete resolution of diabetes and blood pressure (hypertension). Seeing these results, Alexandria, who weighed 102 kg, decided to travel to Hyderabad along with Jane and undergo surgery under my supervision.”

Surgery and recovery

The procedure performed was a Sleeve Gastrectomy, where two-thirds of the stomach is removed to reduce its size. The surgery helps lower insulin resistance and improves conditions such as high blood pressure and renal failure.

“She had a very positive mindset, recovered within 24 hours, and was discharged the very next day,” said Dr Mannur. “She is able to go around the hotel within a couple of days. She is now preparing to return to England in another three days. Alexandria is extremely happy with the results so far and the speed of her recovery.”

Motivation for the surgery

Alexandria works as a black taxi driver in London, a profession that requires three years of rigorous training and knowledge of the city’s streets. The physically demanding nature of her job, combined with her health conditions, motivated her to seek surgery in Hyderabad.

Broader benefits of bariatric surgery

Highlighting the significance of the procedure, Dr Mannur said: “Sleeve Gastrectomy is a safe, minimally invasive procedure with long-term benefits. It not only reduces weight but also helps control diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnoea, improving overall quality of life and increasing the lifespan by at least a decade. Unlike medication-based treatments, this surgery ensures long-lasting results when done with the right approach.”
